That's an easy one: a paucity of new experimental results that challenge the status quo. And, I enjoy the Science vs Religion debates, especially those that cast Science as a Religion. Superstring theory has always both intrigued and bothered me. Some time ago, I read Lee Smolin's The Trouble With Physics. What is the current trouble with particle physics? New York: Houghton Mifflin, 2006. Well, there are "math" engineers and "physics" engineers. (You know how there are "cat" people and "dog" people? We have a Big Bang theory of the birth of the cosmos and only the known forces to account for the presently observed universe. Does anyone have any comments about this book I've just started reading? I know I am arriving a bit late to this game; I only got hand of the book after returning from from Canada, and I have been very busy these weks since then. Believe it or not, but I've been reading a book on theoretical physics. (New York: Houghton, 2006) The trouble, as Smolin sees it, is that physics has become too fixated on string theory. Of course, I agree with you that blogging is a really good way to expose the general community to the process of physics and the concepts involved.
